RI Heritage, Inc.

The Rock Island operates heritage executive and excursion service under the RI Heritage, Inc. division. This company is funded mostly through donations and is responsible to the preservation of most of Rock Island's historic operating equipment in use today.

RI Heritage, Inc. continues an aggressive campaign to restore equipment that could be useful for executive equipment used by Rock Island officers or for excursion service that is followed by many Rock Island fans. Currently, RI Heritage, Inc. owns eight lightweight passenger cars, the 4-8-4 Northern 5101 steam locomotive, and recently finished restoration work on a set of Alco PA/PB equipment, numbers 607 and 610.

The Rock Island is currently undergoing a program to restore the last operating steam locomotive of the railroad, which was last run in 1953. This locomotive was donated to Enid, Oklahoma upon retirement and was saved in 2005 by the Rock Island from further deterioration. It is hoped that restoration progress will be complete by mid 2008.
